From Publishers Weekly
The title is borrowed from one of Warwick's timeless collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Hal David, but her book is a flat, pedestrian self-esteem primer. Little D lives in a multicultural neighborhood and walks the straight and narrow path. She loves school (math the most), never eats treats from her father's candy store til after three and is happy to be myself. So strong is Little D's character that when her big moments arrive—solos of Jesus Loves Me in her church and during a Kids' Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater—it's anticlimactic: she says a little prayer and then brings down the house. Brazilian illustrator Soud can't seem to get the proportions of his characters right (the children's heads in particular seem frighteningly oversize). But he's very good at evoking the feel of a packed public space—his scenes in Little D's church and the Apollo give the book its few moments of drama. The accompanying CD has Warwick reading the text and performing the gospel song. All ages. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2—Young Dionne Warwick—Little D—is presented as an ordinary girl wandering through her neighborhood, enjoying school and games with friends, and dreaming about her future. When her preacher grandfather asks her to sing in church one Sunday, Little D realizes that her voice is her God-given talent and that her life should be "giving herself to song." There seems to be some attempt at a rhyme scheme in the first half of the book, but the result is awkward doggerel: "Plus, I have a treasure chest of pranks,/for hiding one of my brother's toys/or/my sister's left shoe/or/dressing our bow-wow/Sonny Boy/in my fabulicious tutu." Halfway through, any attempt at rhyme seems to have been abandoned, and what remains is equally awkward prose. Soud's illustrations are bright and sunny and feature a multigenerational, multiethnic cast of characters, but they can't compensate for the flawed text. On the accompanying CD, Warwick reads the book and sings "Jesus Loves Me," which she sang in church at her grandfather's request.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ
